The UC Santa Barbara Marine Science Institute is proud to share that Dr. Rebecca Vega Thurber, Professor of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology and Director of the Marine Science Institute, has been elected a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences.
The non-native black rat was the only small mammal infected with Hantavirus in an immensely biodiverse region of Madagascar. Animals trapped in agricultural fields carried the disease more often than those trapped in homes or in the rainforest.
