Assistant Project Scientist

The Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks an Assistant Project Scientist to conduct a study on hippopotamus ecology in sub-Saharan Africa. The applicant will be in charge of designing and running their own ecological study in conjunction with the McCauley Lab at UCSB. This work will include a significant amount of terrestrial and aquatic ecology fieldwork in several sub-Saharan African countries including Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. Research will include extensive periods of time spent collecting data in the field on the ecological role of hippopotamus. This position will entail detailed laboratory analyses of video, field and telemetry samples. The Assistant Project Scientist will be expected to participate in solo field expeditions, which will entail them using their intellectual creativity and technical skills to conduct this study.

The initial appointment is for approximately 50% time and approximately one year in duration, with reappointment based upon funding availability. Minimum qualifications: PhD in Ecology or related field with a publication record in peer reviewed journals. Additional qualifications: Qualified applicants must possess a California driver’s license. Qualified applicants must be able to travel internationally and live out of country for extensive periods of time. Desirable qualifications: Fluency in English, basic proficiency in Zulu, Afrikaans and Swahili. 4x4 off-road driving certificate (or proven track record of experience) in addition to experience driving in off-road conditions. Experience with sedating wild animals. Experience with game capture techniques. Prior experience conducting field research in remote areas for extended periods of time. Experience with tracking movements of large, wild mammals via GPS telemetry.
